Abdominoplasty or "tummy tuck" as it is more commonly referred to, is a surgical procedure that helps flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles, creating a smooth, flat and well defined abdomen. Our surgeon frequently combines this procedure with liposuction of the flanks (lipoabdominoplasty) to create an aesthetically pleasing profile.
The best candidates for an abdominoplasty are those in good physical condition with pockets of fat or loose skin that have not responded well to diet and exercise. Older, slightly obese people whose skin has lost some of its elasticity can be also helped. An abdominoplasty can be especially useful for women with stretched skin and muscles after pregnancy. Patients who have lost significant amounts of fat and are left with excess skin, particularly after bariatric surgery, benefit significantly from this procedure as well.
The procedure takes approximately two to three hours and can be performed with general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Recovery time ranges from three to six weeks. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, the results are long-lasting.
An abdominoplasty leaves a horizontal scar in the lower abdomen. It is usually possible for this scar to be low enough for even a bikini to conceal it. Occasionally, it may be necessary to make a small vertical scar as well. Our consultant surgeon will discuss this during your detailed initial consultation.
During the procedure, the surgeon will make two incisions: one from hipbone to hipbone close to the pubic area, and one around the navel. Skin is separated from the abdominal muscles, which are then pulled together and stitched into place for a firmer abdomen and narrower waist. The skin flap is stretched down and over the newly tightened muscles, excess skin is removed, and the navel is reattached. Finally, the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures and dressings applied. Occasionally a temporary tube (drain) may be inserted to drain excess fluid from the surgical site.
A partial abdominoplasty is similar to an abdominoplasty except a shorter incision is made and the skin is only lifted to the navel, which does not have to be moved (although it may be pulled into a different shape as skin is stretched).
The "mini" procedure is ideal for patients who need just a little improvement in order to reach their desired results, such as those within 10% of their ideal body weight. It offers patients many benefits, including less scarring, a shorter recovery time and an overall less invasive procedure. You can discuss the differences between these procedures, as well as weigh their benefits and risks with the surgeon in order to decide which procedure is best for you.
