The Mini Facelift – MACS or S Lift

Sometimes the way we feel on the inside doesn't reflect the way we look on the outside. Many people now choose to have a mini facelift to bring back a youthful, fresher looking appearance. A facelift tightens the facial muscles to restore definition and the skin is also tightened to smooth out deep lines. You can choose to refine the appearance of your lower face including the jaw and neckline, or lift your jaw and neck areas only. The results are natural and long-lasting.

We also know that cosmetic treatment is about more than just enhancing your appearance — it’s about changing your life. At LasaDerm, there’s no rush or pressure to have treatment right away. We provide a free consultation to make sure that you know exactly what to expect from your surgery. With a worry-free approach, we will ensure your treatment goes exactly the way you want it to. Of course, once you have decided to undergo treatment, it’s inevitable that you’ll have various questions. That’s what we’re here for.

What is a Mini Facelift?

The mini facelift procedure is also known by a variety of other names. Some are more scientific or technical (the ‘mini rhytidectomy’) whilst others describe the cosmetic surgery technique itself such as the ‘short-scar face lift’ (S-lift) or “MACS” but “mini face lift” is probably the most popular and commonly referred name for this procedure.

A mini facelift is a minimally invasive facial rejuvenation procedure with fewer traumas and a faster recovery compared to a full facelift. Like any type of face lift cosmetic surgery, the mini facelift aims to create a younger appearance and to improve your self-confidence. This is done by repositioning and tightening the skin and soft tissue of the face. The procedure uses advancements in facial aesthetic surgery to limit the scarring with less invasive surgery.  On average you can expect to look around eight to ten years younger when you have fully recovered from your mini facelift. The benefits will last around ten years although this will depend on the elasticity of your skin and your lifestyle. Factors including diet, body weight and exposure to sunlight will affect your overall results and of course your skin will continue to age in the normal way.

Who is suitable for a mini facelift?

The mini facelift is particularly helpful for patients with sagging jowls, sagging cheeks, prominent nose to mouth lines (nasolabial folds) and marionette line. The procedure creates an upward and backward lift, mimicking the result achieved by placing one’s thumb in front of the ear and pulling upwards and backwards. This results in a significant improvement in the appearance of the lower face and neck.

The effects of the mini facelift are also much more natural than a traditional full facelift. This less invasive version of the procedure is best for patients in their middle ages, suffering from heavy, tired skin with a loss of elasticity. Whilst the mini facelift is not as dramatic as the full face lift, it is very good for fixing specific signs of ageing in the face as a preventative or maintenance procedure. The final result is a natural refreshed look.

What are the advantages over the other types of facelift?

Specifically the advantages of the mini facelift are:

  • Immediate improvement of prominent jowls and nasolabial folds
  • Improvement in the neckline
  • Fewer risks and complications than with a full surgical facelift
  • Rapid recovery and return to normal daily activities – typically within two weeks
  • Minimal scarring, swelling and bruising
  • The treatment is carried out under sedation and local anaesthesia; a general anaesthetic is not required

How does it differ from a full facelift?

With a full facelift the surgery is more extensive with the dissection extending into the tissues of the neck. Although this provides a more dramatic improvement in the appearance of the neck, the risks are higher and the recovery period is longer and more prolonged compared to a mini facelift. The effects of the mini facelift are also much more natural than a traditional full facelift.

What happens during surgery?

The patient is first given a relaxant. The face is then cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic. Thereafter, an incision is made at the edge of the hairline above the ear running close to the front of the ear and finishing approximately one inch behind the ear.

The skin of the face is then freed from the underlying tissues, the tissue layer under the skin is lifted and tightened and held in place by a looped suture. The excess skin is then removed to produce a more defined youthful looking jaw and neckline. The wounds are closed and usually no drains are needed. Typically, the procedure takes 2-3 hours to perform. During this, the patient should feel no discomfort and is often chatting to the surgeon.

What about after surgery?

The patient’s head is then wrapped in a facelift bandage which stays on for 5 days to help minimise swelling. Patients need to sleep with 3 pillows in a semi-recumbent position for 1 week and must avoid doing anything which lowers the head below the heart.

By two weeks the scars have begun to heal. Usually all the stitches are self – dissolving and do not need to be removed.

The bruising settles down over 10 days with complete results visible from 6 weeks onwards. Some of the swelling may take up to 3 months to fully settle.

How long will the effects of the mini facelift last?

The results of a mini facelift typically last between around eight- ten years.

What are the potential risks and complications?

When choosing any form of medical or surgical intervention, you need to be fully aware of the potential risks. Your surgeon will go through all of these with you in detail.

After Surgery

Recovery from surgery is usually quite quick. We advise taking it easy for the first week after surgery, although most patients feel quite well after a day or two. You may experience a little swelling and bruising to begin with, for up to two or three weeks. By the second week you should be looking and feeling much better. Most patients return to work ten days to two weeks after surgery. Plenty of rest helps to speed up the healing process, as does avoiding strenuous activity for at least two weeks after your mini facelift.  Mini facelift procedures are typically less invasive than a traditional facelift; because of this you can expect a shorter recovery.
